3MW Community Solar Plants to be Built in Chad

Convalt Energy has partnered with Chad’s Ministry of Water and Energy to build three community solar plants in Lai, Bongor, and Moundou, delivering 3 MW of solar power and 1.5 MWh of battery storage. These projects aim to strengthen Chad's energy production capabilities and meet the growing demand for electricity.

Addressing Energy Challenges

US-based Convalt Energy has taken a significant step to expand renewable energy in Chad. The New York-based company has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Chad’s Ministry of Water and Energy. This agreement marks the construction of three community solar plants, totaling 3 MW of solar capacity — supported by 1.5 MWh of battery storage.

The new community solar plants will be located in Lai, Bongor, and Moundou. These cities are set to benefit from the combined 3 MW of solar energy and advanced battery storage systems. Chad’s Ministry of Water and Energy hailed the projects as vital for improving the nation’s power generation capabilities.

In a statement, the ministry said, “These projects represent another stage in strengthening the country’s electrical energy production capabilities in the face of ever-increasing demand from the population.”

Addressing Energy Challenges

Chad currently faces significant energy challenges, with a reliance on limited renewable energy resources. As of the end of 2023, the country had only 2 MW of installed solar capacity — according to the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA). The addition of these community solar plants will more than double Chad’s solar capacity, thereby creating a substantial impact on the nation’s energy grid.

The inclusion of battery storage systems enhances the reliability of these solar plants. The 1.5 MWh of storage will help stabilize electricity supply during non-sunlight hours, ensuring a steady flow of power for local communities.

Community solar plants play a crucial role in decentralizing energy production. They provide clean, affordable power to local communities, reducing dependence on fossil fuels. For Chad, these plants represent an opportunity to expand access to electricity while promoting sustainable energy solutions.

With these solar projects, Convalt Energy aims to bridge the energy gap in underserved regions. By focusing on community-driven energy solutions, the company aligns with Chad’s broader goals of improving living standards and supporting economic growth.

A Step Towards Energy Independence

Convalt Energy is not stopping at community solar plants. The company’s website reveals plans for a larger 120 MW solar power project in N’Djamena, Chad’s capital city. This ambitious project is currently in the late stages of development. Construction for the N’Djamena solar plant is scheduled to begin in the second quarter of 2025. Once completed, the plant is expected to commence operations in 2026, further strengthening Chad’s renewable energy infrastructure.

These community solar plants signal a move towards greater energy independence for Chad. By investing in renewable energy projects, the country is reducing its reliance on expensive and polluting energy imports.

Convalt Energy’s commitment to Chad underscores the growing importance of international partnerships in advancing sustainable energy. With this collaboration, Chad can look forward to a cleaner, more reliable energy future. The construction of three community solar plants in Lai, Bongor, and Moundou marks a pivotal moment for Chad’s energy sector. These projects will double the nation’s solar capacity and bring clean energy to thousands.

Convalt Energy’s investments reflect a strong commitment to renewable energy and community development. As Chad continues to face rising energy demands, these solar plants represent a sustainable solution to power the nation’s future. For Chad, the future of energy is looking brighter, cleaner, and more sustainable. With projects like these, the country is paving the way for a resilient energy infrastructure that benefits all its citizens.
