Brookfield Renewable to Build 900 MW Solar Project in Oregon

A major new renewable energy initiative is underway in Oregon as Brookfield Renewable Partners has formally begun the development process for a massive 900-megawatt solar and battery storage facility. Known as the Speedway Project, the facility is planned for Sherman County and represents a significant step forward in the state’s clean energy transition.

The company advanced the project by filing a Notice of Intent (NOI) with the Oregon Department of Energy on July 30, 2024. Located near Grass Valley and the Oregon Raceway Park, the site was chosen for its proximity to existing transmission infrastructure, which will help minimize the environmental footprint and the need for new power lines. The integrated battery energy storage system is designed to enhance grid stability and reliability in the region.

A key feature of the Speedway Project is its innovative design aimed at preserving the area’s agricultural heritage. The facility will be arranged in “ribbons,” allowing farming activities and wildlife corridors to coexist alongside one of the largest solar power plants in the United States. Spanning an estimated 4,500 to 6,000 acres, this dual-use approach balances clean energy generation with land stewardship.

“With Speedway, we want to preserve the county’s legacy of natural resource stewardship,” said John Soininen, vice president of development at Brookfield Renewable U.S. “By working with the landowners, we can reach our twin goals of decarbonizing the grid and maintaining the character of the region.”

The economic benefits for Sherman County are projected to be substantial. The construction phase is expected to create hundreds of well-paying jobs, stimulating the local economy. Once operational, the Speedway Project will provide long-term employment opportunities and generate significant tax revenue, which will support crucial community services including education, infrastructure, and emergency response.

“We are pleased to deliver the NOI and take this significant step forward in developing the Speedway Project,” Soininen added. “We are grateful for the warm welcome we have received in Sherman County and look forward to building long-term relationships throughout the community.”
