At a media roundtable held at the Sheraton Hotel in Ikeja, Lagos, Airtel shared its plans for energy efficiency and sustainability. The company currently spends an astounding N28 billion monthly on diesel, which amounts to about 22 million litres of diesel every month to power its sites.
Airtel’s Director of Corporate Communications, Femi Adediran explained the need for change. He emphasized that the company's massive diesel consumption was a growing concern, thereby prompting the need for alternative energy sources. "We spend N28 billion on diesel alone every month, and our sites across the country gulp over 22 million litres of diesel," he said.
In response to this challenge, Airtel Nigeria is now leveraging solar power and other renewable energy sources. The company plans to power its base stations with cleaner and more sustainable energy solutions, significantly cutting down diesel consumption. This approach will not only reduce costs, but also help the firm minimize its environmental impact.
Airtel Nigeria’s Green Technology Investment
In addition to its solar power initiatives, Airtel Nigeria is investing in cutting-edge technology to further reduce its carbon footprint. Harmanpreet Singh Dhillon, Airtel’s Chief Technical Officer, shared details of the company's transition to more efficient technologies.
The telecommunication firm is investing in Lithium-ion batteries, which offer significant energy efficiency compared to traditional batteries. These batteries last longer and reduce the need for frequent replacements, thus helping the company lower both operational costs and environmental impact.
Dhillon also highlighted the use of outdoor-operable electronics and telecom equipment. Traditional telecom equipment is highly sensitive to environmental conditions such as temperature and humidity, which require indoor setups and air conditioning.
The Role of Artificial Intelligence
Airtel Nigeria is also using Artificial Intelligence (AI) to improve its services and optimize operations. Kemi Ariyo — Airtel’s Director of Information Technology — explained that the company actively uses AI to study consumer behavior. This allows the firm to tailor its products and services more effectively to meet customer needs.
Ariyo also shared updates on Airtel’s Tier 1 data center, which is currently under construction in Lagos. The data center is expected to be completed in 2027 and will significantly improve data services in Nigeria.
In addition to its sustainability efforts, the telecommunication company is focusing on expanding its network and improving connectivity. Ismail Adeshina, Airtel’s Marketing Director, announced that the company’s 5G rollout across the country is progressing and will be completed soon.

Airtel has also partnered with UNICEF and the federal government to provide IT facilities and internet connectivity to 1,280 schools across Nigeria. This collaboration aims to improve access to education and technology for students in underserved areas.
