Portuguese utility EDP - Energias de Portugal SA has revealed its acquisition of 44.3 MWp in solar distributed generation (DG) parks in Brazil.
EDP Expands Solar Portfolio in Brazil with 16 New Plants
EDP acquired 16 new decentralized solar plants from Tangipar Group, Brazil's leading solar energy company. The contract includes projects across the states of Bahia, Mato Grosso, Mato Grosso do Sul and Paraná totaling an installed capacity of 44.3 MWp.
Notably, the project in Mato Grosso marks EDP's first investment in that state, broadening its solar energy footprint across Brazil. Of the 16 solar plants, five are already operational with the remaining expected to be completed by 2025. The plants will add 10.9 MWp in Bahia, 12.5 MWp in Mato Grosso, 12.9 MWp in Mato Grosso do Sul and 7.7 MWp in Paraná.
EDP Invests €35 Million to Expand Distributed Solar Energy
With an investment of approximately 35 million euros, EDP strengthens its role in the energy transition and deepens its commitment to distributed solar generation in Brazil. These solar plants will supply low-voltage companies using a local shared energy production model, similar to EDP’s recent Morgan East and Morgan West projects in New York. By 2026, the company aims to reach around 500 MWp of installed solar capacity in the country through decentralized projects. This transaction is pending approval from the Brazilian Council for Economic Defense (CADE).
Upon completion of the deal, the 16 new solar plants will join EDP's existing portfolio of 90 solar plants in Brazil, bringing the total installed capacity to over 250 MWp, with approximately 210 MWp already operational.
“Decentralized solar production represents a huge opportunity to accelerate the energy transition together with our customers. In other words, more than expanding our operations and capacity in renewable sources to become 100% green by 2030, we want to contribute to the decarbonization of the economy, making solar energy more accessible to different types of consumers,” said Carlos Andrade, vice president of EDP Brazil.
EDP Expands Solar DistributedGeneration Across Brazil
EDP currently operates solar distributed generation across ten Brazilian states as well as in the Federal District. This model enables renewable electricity generation near the consumption point, either through a dedicated plant for a single customer or a shared facility serving multiple customers within the same concession area. The generated energy is fed into the local distributor's grid, creating credits that offset the customer's electricity bill.
The growing awareness among companies across various sectors to decarbonize and enhance sustainability through renewable energy has driven increased demand for distributed generation. Along with sustainability benefits, the potential for energy cost savings—often exceeding 10%—is also a compelling factor.
