Energy Firm Unveils Solar Panels at 2024 Solar Conference

Ener-G-Africa introduced new innovative solar panels at the 2024 Solar & Storage Conference, targeting niche markets in Africa. The solar panels are designed to meet the growing demand for small-scale solar power across the continent.

Targeting Niche Markets with the 275 W Solar Panel

Ener-G-Africa has introduced its latest solar products at the 2024 Solar & Storage Conference and Exhibition in Cape Town, South Africa. The company launched a 550 W solar panel — which aligns with industry standards — and a 275 W solar panel that targets specific niche markets across Africa.

The 275 W solar panel stands out for its unique design and targeted applications. Ener-G-Africa's business development director, Dave Lello highlighted the panel’s purpose during an exclusive interview. "With the 275 W panel, we are targeting applications that are niche but numerous across African solar energy markets," he stated.

The demand for this panel was driven by the need for more small-scale solar power in Africa. Initially, many solar installations across the continent were limited to pico-solar systems which provided just enough power for basic lighting. However, the growing energy needs of the population now require solutions that offer more power.

Versatility in Applications

The 275 W solar panel by Ener-G-Africa is designed to meet these evolving demands. It provides enough power for not just lighting but also for additional household needs like a TV and a small fridge. The panel can also support small-scale agricultural applications and other enterprises, such as powering water pumps or refrigerators.

Another potential application for the 275 W panel is in urban environments, particularly for apartment buildings or security systems like CCTV camera arrays. Lello mentioned that the company is already negotiating a contract to use these panels for a community CCTV project.

The panel’s design is both light and strong, with a square shape that makes it easier to handle and less vulnerable to wind damage. This is especially important when the panels are installed on top of poles or pylons, as is common in many CCTV installations.

Assembly and Future Plans

Ener-G-Africa assembles both the 275 W and 550 W solar panels at its facility in Paarl, near Cape Town. Currently, the key components, which include solar PV modules, glass, and frames are imported.

However, the company has plans to source the glass and frames locally in the future. The assembly process involves a lamination process, which includes the integration of the electrical system. This ensures the panels are durable and efficient.

The 550 W panel, while standard in size, continues to play a crucial role in the company’s offerings. However, it is the 275 W panel that has generated significant interest due to its adaptability and potential for various applications.

Addressing Energy Needs in Africa

Lello explained the company's strategy, saying, "We see ourselves as a vertically integrated company, manufacturing and selling our own products in Africa." This vertical integration allows Ener-G-Africa to maintain control over the quality and distribution of its products, ensuring that they meet the specific needs of African consumers.

The 2024 Solar & Storage Conference and Exhibition provided Ener-G-Africa with a platform to showcase its innovative solar panels and reinforce its commitment to addressing the energy needs of Africa. The launch of the 275 W panel highlights the company’s focus on creating products that are functional and also tailored to the specific challenges and opportunities within the African solar market.

Ener-G-Africa's participation in the Solar Conference marks a significant step in its mission to provide sustainable energy solutions across Africa. The introduction of the 275 W solar panel is set to address the growing demand for small-scale solar power. This offers a reliable and versatile energy source for households, businesses, and communities throughout the continent.
