Azura Power West Africa will unveil a 240 KW solar carport at the University of Nigeria Nsukka on November 12, 2024, marking a significant step in Nigeria’s renewable energy efforts. This solar car park supports UNN’s energy needs and aligns with the nation’s shift toward sustainable power solutions.
Solar Carport: A Major Step for Renewable Energy in Nigeria
On Tuesday, November 12, 2024, Azura Power West Africa will unveil a 240 KW solar carport at the University of Nigeria Nsukka (UNN). This solar carport is part of Azura Power’s broader “Power to Change” initiative, a program focused on sustainable and socially responsible investments across Nigeria.
The ceremony will be officiated by Minister of Power Adebayo Adelabu, highlighting the government’s commitment to energy transition under President Bola Tinubu’s power sector reforms. This solar installation marks a significant step forward for renewable energy in Nigeria, supporting the nation’s goals to shift toward clean and sustainable power sources.
The solar project is a key milestone for both Azura Power and UNN. As one of Nigeria’s top universities, UNN will benefit from this modern solar facility that not only meets a large part of the university’s energy needs but also represents a major step forward in sustainable development.
Supporting Learning and Energy Independence at UNN
In a statement released from Abuja, Murtala Bello, the Head of Corporate Affairs for Azura Power, shared that the solar carport demonstrates the company’s commitment to corporate social responsibility and sustainable development. “Every year, Azura Power allocates $1 million to support projects that promote sustainable livelihoods, health, education, and infrastructure,” Bello said.
He explained that the solar carport is more than an addition to the university’s facilities. “This solar carport represents a major step towards achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs),” Bello continued. It will serve as a valuable resource for the university community, supporting educational and social development through renewable energy.
The solar car park will provide clean and reliable energy to UNN, supporting approximately 2,650 engineering students and fulfilling about 75% of the faculty’s energy needs. Azura Power expects the carport to generate over 400,000 kWh of renewable energy each year.
This substantial power generation will help the university maintain a consistent power supply, creating a better environment for learning and innovation. By reducing the university’s reliance on non-renewable energy, the solar carport will also support Nigeria’s ambitions to reach net-zero emissions.
A Landmark Investment in Nigeria’s Renewable Energy Future
In addition to environmental benefits, the solar carport will offer substantial financial savings for the university. According to Bello, this installation will reduce the university’s annual energy expenses by an estimated ₦150 million. This financial relief will allow UNN to reallocate its resources toward other critical areas, such as academic programs, facility improvements, and student services.
Azura Power has invested approximately 900 million Naira into this solar project. This makes it one of the largest renewable energy initiatives in Nigeria’s education sector, and it serves as a landmark for the nation’s renewable energy landscape. Azura Power’s investment is not only a strategic move for its business but also a commitment to Nigeria’s future in sustainable energy.
Bello emphasized that Azura Power’s solar carport will benefit more than just the university. “This project reflects our commitment to supporting Nigeria’s net-zero ambitions,” he said. Azura Power’s dedication to renewable energy is evident in its financial and operational support for projects that reduce carbon emissions and drive sustainable growth in local communities.
Azura Power’s solar carport installation at the University of Nigeria Nsukka is a vital contribution to Nigeria’s renewable energy journey. By supporting the university’s energy needs with a sustainable and reliable power source, Azura Power is making a tangible impact on the local community. This project is a model for how solar carports and other renewable technologies can help Nigeria achieve its energy transition goals.
