Phillips 66 has partnered with NextEra Energy Resources to enhance the sustainability of its Rodeo Renewable Energy Complex. The collaboration will add a 30.2-megawatt (MW) solar facility to the site, marking a significant step in reducing carbon emissions and advancing clean energy solutions.
Solar Facility Will Generate 60,000 MWh Annually
NextEra Energy Resources will own and operate the solar facility, which spans about 88 acres of land owned by Phillips 66. Featuring over 70,000 solar modules , the installation will support the adjacent renewable fuels complex. It will produce approximately 60,000 MWh of electricity annually—enough to power over 23,000 electric vehicles each year.
The Rodeo Renewable Energy Complex produces renewable fuels, such as renewable diesel and sustainable aviation fuel, using low-carbon feedstocks like used cooking oil, fats, greases, and vegetable oil.
With its strategic location, advanced processing infrastructure, and efficient transportation logistics, the energy complex is a leading global supplier of renewable fuels with lower life-cycle carbon emissions than traditional fuels.
Rebecca Kujawa, president & CEO of NextEra Energy Resources, said: “We are thrilled to collaborate with Phillips 66 on the Rodeo solar facility, which exemplifies our commitment to developing custom solutions to meet our customers’ growing energy needs at the speed they require. This project will not only benefit Phillips 66’s operations and the customers who rely on its renewable fuels but it also demonstrates how renewable energy can integrate seamlessly into industrial operations.”
Phillips 66 unveiled the Rodeo Renewed project in 2020 and finalized its investment decision in 2022. The complex transitioned to processing exclusively renewable feedstocks in March, reaching its full capacity of 50,000 barrels per day (BPD) of renewable feedstock by June.
Solar Facility to Halve Grid Demand and Cut Emissions
The solar facility will cut the complex’s reliance on grid power by 50% and is expected to eliminate approximately 33,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions annually.
Scheduled to begin operations in the first quarter of 2025, this development ranks among the largest on-site dedicated solar facilities in the United States.
Zhanna Golodryga, executive vice president of Emerging Energy and Sustainability for Phillips 66, stated: “We are excited to collaborate with NextEra Energy Resources on a project that aligns with our mission of providing energy and improving lives. This solar facility not only underscores our commitment to advancing a lower-carbon future but also enhances our energy infrastructure.”
