Solar Energy Drives Mopo’s Transformation of Sierra Leone Healthcare Facilities

Mopo has partnered with Heta to bring solar energy to healthcare facilities in Sierra Leone, electrifying Waterloo Rural Community Hospital and Wara Wara Faith Clinic. The initiative includes solar-powered Mopo Hubs, offering pay-per-use battery rentals to provide affordable and reliable power to communities lacking stable grid infrastructure.

Solar-Powered Health Centres in Sierra Leone

Mopo — a UK-based leader in pay-per-use battery technology — has partnered with The Health Electrification and Telecommunications Alliance (Heta) to revolutionize electricity access in Sierra Leone. This collaboration, which is supported by Power Africa — a USAID global development initiative — focuses on electrifying healthcare facilities with sustainable energy solutions and empowering local communities.

As part of this partnership, Mopo has provided solar energy to two key healthcare centres: Waterloo Rural Community Hospital and Wara Wara Faith Clinic. The initiative also includes the installation of solar-powered Mopo Hubs near each location. These hubs rent Mopo’s proprietary batteries on a pay-per-use basis, delivering affordable and reliable energy to areas where grid infrastructure is either absent or highly unreliable.

This innovative rental model democratizes access to energy, enabling individuals and businesses to power their operations sustainably. The results are evident not just in the improved healthcare facilities but also in the enhanced quality of life for the surrounding communities.

Enhancing Healthcare with Solar Energy

At Wara Wara Faith Clinic, solar power has transformed operations. Critical medical equipment such as oxygen machines and refrigeration units for medicines now run without interruption. This ensures that patients receive 24-hour care while vaccines and other temperature-sensitive supplies are stored safely, thus improving health outcomes and boosting trust in local healthcare systems.

Waterloo Rural Community Hospital has also seen significant improvements. The introduction of solar-powered fans has made patient rooms cooler and quieter. This has been particularly beneficial during Sierra Leone’s hot and humid nights, thereby providing comfort to patients and supporting faster recovery.

The impact of Mopo’s solar solutions goes beyond the walls of the healthcare facilities. The solar-powered Mopo hubs provide pay-per-use batteries, offering affordable and sustainable electricity to underserved communities. Residents can use these batteries to power essential household appliances like lights, fans, and small electronics, significantly improving daily living conditions. Entrepreneurs also benefit by using the batteries to operate equipment, extend working hours, and scale their businesses.

Mopo chairman Jono West spoke about the company’s vision, stating, “We are delighted to be working with Heta, deploying our technology and solar power expertise both for the facilities and the local community. Together, we’re building healthier and more resilient communities through sustainable energy solutions.”

Heta’s Role in Energy Transformation

Heta — a key initiative of Power Africa — plays a crucial role in this transformative partnership. By bringing together global leaders in renewable energy, digital technology, and health solutions, Heta aims to electrify and digitally connect healthcare facilities across sub-Saharan Africa. The alliance collaborates with private-sector companies, philanthropic foundations, and African governments to expand electricity access.

Led by Abt Global and supported by founding partners Bechtel Corporation, Resolve, and Orange, Heta is setting a new standard for energy access initiatives. By focusing on healthcare, the alliance ensures that its solutions have both immediate and long-term benefits.

Mopo’s collaboration with Heta demonstrates how public-private partnerships can address critical development challenges. By combining solar energy with an innovative pay-per-use battery model, Mopo is not only improving healthcare delivery but also fostering sustainable energy practices that benefit entire communities.

The benefits of this initiative are wide-ranging. Families can now enjoy better living conditions, healthcare workers have the tools they need to save lives, and businesses can thrive in an environment with reliable energy access. The combined efforts of Mopo, Heta, and Power Africa are laying the foundation for a brighter and more sustainable future.

Mopo’s partnership with Heta is revolutionizing energy and healthcare access in Sierra Leone by deploying solar power and pay-per-use batteries, transforming lives and driving community growth. By prioritizing innovation and sustainability, Mopo demonstrates how clean energy solutions can create lasting impact, positioning the company to expand its reach to underserved regions worldwide.
