Solar Projects Propel South Africa Toward 875 MW Milestone by 2025

South Africa's solar projects reached significant milestones in 2024 as total solar PV capacity grew to 8.97 GW and increased by 11.9 percent compared to 2023. SAPVIA’s advocacy and 961 MW of private-sector additions underscore the sector’s resilience and potential for continued growth.

Driving a Greener Future in 2024

As 2024 concludes, the South African Photovoltaic Industry Association (SAPVIA) celebrates a year of progress in solar projects. The year was marked by achievements, challenges, and a firm step toward a sustainable energy future.

By October, South Africa added 961 MW of private-sector solar PV capacity. This growth reflects the resilience of the solar sector despite regulatory and logistical hurdles. The nation’s total solar PV capacity surged to 8.97 GW, an 11.9% increase from 2023. This total includes 2.8 GW from public procurement programs and 6.1 GW from private-sector contributions.

Dr. Rethabile Melamu, CEO of SAPVIA, emphasized the sector's potential. “With 500 MW of utility-scale projects under construction and 375 MW slated for 2025, the future of solar in South Africa looks incredibly promising,” she said. SAPVIA’s advocacy efforts have been crucial, including contributions to the Integrated Resource Plan (IRP) draft and support for the South African Wholesale Electricity Market (SAWEM).

Solar Projects as an Economic Driver

The solar industry has emerged as a key economic contributor. It has created jobs, advanced skills development, and stimulated business growth. A notable initiative this year was SAPVIA’s partnership with the National Business Initiative (NBI) and Absa. Together, they trained 100 installation companies to meet the growing demand for solar projects.

Private-sector leaders have also played a pivotal role. Companies like SOLA made significant strides in advancing renewable energy solutions. These efforts show that solar projects are providing energy and transforming the economy.

This year, solar energy made a significant impact on South Africa’s energy landscape. The country enjoyed 300 days of uninterrupted electricity, thanks in part to solar projects. Solar PV systems supplied 5.2 TWh of energy, thereby displacing approximately 4,260 tons of CO2. These contributions highlight the environmental and economic benefits of solar energy.

“Solar energy is not just about powering homes and businesses,” Melamu stated. “It’s about shaping a sustainable future for all South Africans.” She added that these efforts are positioning South Africa as a global leader in renewable energy innovation.

Overcoming the Challenges

Despite the successes, 2024 was not without its challenges. Regulatory delays, grid connection backlogs, and limited financing options for small and medium enterprises (SMEs) posed significant obstacles. SAPVIA addressed these issues by engaging with the Department of Mineral Resources and Energy (DMRE) and the National Energy Regulator of South Africa (NERSA).

“We launched a financing access initiative to connect SMEs with funding opportunities,” said Melamu. SAPVIA also fostered partnerships between SMEs and larger companies to encourage resource sharing and expertise exchange.

Shaping the Future of Solar Projects

Looking ahead, SAPVIA anticipates major developments in energy storage. Interest in solar-plus-storage systems is growing, particularly to combat intermittency issues. Microgrids are also gaining traction in rural areas where grid access remains limited. Rooftop solar installations are expected to increase as electricity prices rise, and consumers seek independence from the grid.

SAPVIA is collaborating with stakeholders on a comprehensive grid upgrade plan. This includes integrating smart grids and energy storage to support the growth of renewable energy. Such initiatives are expected to ensure that solar projects remain a cornerstone of South Africa’s energy strategy.

SAPVIA remains steadfast in its mission to expand solar energy access. The organization envisions a future where every South African benefits from affordable, reliable, and clean energy. By driving solar projects and supporting policy advocacy, SAPVIA continues to pave the way for a sustainable energy revolution.

As the year ends, the progress in solar projects underscores the potential of renewable energy. South Africa’s solar journey is not only reshaping the energy landscape, but it is also fostering economic growth and environmental sustainability. The future of solar in the country looks brighter than ever.
