By October, South Africa added 961 MW of private-sector solar PV capacity. This growth reflects the resilience of the solar sector despite regulatory and logistical hurdles. The nation’s total solar PV capacity surged to 8.97 GW, an 11.9% increase from 2023. This total includes 2.8 GW from public procurement programs and 6.1 GW from private-sector contributions.
Dr. Rethabile Melamu, CEO of SAPVIA, emphasized the sector's potential. “With 500 MW of utility-scale projects under construction and 375 MW slated for 2025, the future of solar in South Africa looks incredibly promising,” she said. SAPVIA’s advocacy efforts have been crucial, including contributions to the Integrated Resource Plan (IRP) draft and support for the South African Wholesale Electricity Market (SAWEM).
Solar Projects as an Economic Driver

A notable initiative this year was SAPVIA’s partnership with the National Business Initiative (NBI) and Absa. Regulatory delays, grid connection backlogs, and limited financing options for small and medium enterprises (SMEs) posed significant obstacles. SAPVIA addressed these issues by engaging with the Department of Mineral Resources and Energy (DMRE) and the National Energy Regulator of South Africa (NERSA).
“We launched a financing access initiative to connect SMEs with funding opportunities,” said Melamu. SAPVIA also fostered partnerships between SMEs and larger companies to encourage resource sharing and expertise exchange.

Looking ahead, SAPVIA anticipates major developments in energy storage. Interest in solar-plus-storage systems is growing, particularly to combat intermittency issues. Microgrids are also gaining traction in rural areas where grid access remains limited.
